All Wrapped Up

Kaylee has been going through a new, lovely phase the last few days in which she does not want to be put down. I don't mean 'put down' as in put to bed, but just laid down in any capacity. Let me tell you, this makes getting dressed, going to the bathroom, eating...basically life in general...very difficult.

Enter the moby! I love being able to to wrap her onto my body and go about my day. This way, she is calm and happy, and I have the full use of my hands. Very convenient.

Happy Birthday

Today, for my first birthday as a new momma, I'm going to attempt to come up with 29 (my age) things that I've noticed about my beautiful baby girl. Since this is also my first post where I really talk about Kaylee, I thought it would be a fun idea.

1) She has the tiniest ears I've ever seen. They are just so cute!
2) I think her hair is going to be nice a wavey. It curls up when it's wet but dries straight in some places and wavey in others. She totally has a curly cowlick on the top of her head.
3) She has my mom's mouth and can do so many things with it. She can scrunch it up into this really tiny triangle. It cracks me up.
4) She has her daddy's chin dimple, but it looks so funny set between the chubbiest cheeks imaginable.
5) When she was born, her eyebrows were so light you couldn't really see them. They are slowly getting darker and are way more visible now.
6) She has dimples in her cheeks, but she also has a little strange dimple really close to her top lip. I can only really see it when she's eating. I wonder how much it will show as she grows.
7) She often puts her right hand up next to her face or her chin when she's sleeping. It is just so adorable. She looks like she's posing for a picture.
8) She makes the funniest faces when she's trying to fight falling asleep. She'll open her eyes, but they're kind of rolled back in her head and her mouth twitches.
9) She has the longest fingers I've ever seen! She definitely didn't get those from me. I wonder if she'll ever play the piano or guitar or maybe do some kind of art.
10) She makes the most adorable little grunt and sighing noises when she's eating. That's the only way I can tell when she's actually swallowing rather than just comfort sucking.
11) She makes these cute little raised-eyebrow faces. It's almost like she knows something that she's not telling us.
12) She's become a great sleeper at night. As long as she's swaddled, she'll lay right down after the nighttime feedings.
13) She wakes up slowly in the morning. I can hear her making little grunts and squawks for almost 20 minutes before she really decides to be awake.
14) She doesn't like to nap alone during the day. She can be completely soundly asleep in my lap, but will wake up wailing within 5 minutes of being laid down. Spoiled girl!
15) She loves her swing and finds something fascinating about the joint at the top of the right side. She always stares at it while she's swinging.
16) Her nose is perfect.
17) Her left eye is always a little goopier than her right eye after she's been asleep.
18) She hates any activity which requires the removal of clothing. This includes costume changes, diaper changes, and baths. I guess she's just modest.
19) When there are loud noises while she's sleeping, she's very jumpy but rarely actually wakes up.
20)She loves the Soothies pacifiers that they use at the hospital. We initially thought it was because they are flavored, but I got some non-flavored ones at Babies R Us and she loves them. I think she just prefers the shape.
21) Her hair look dark from a distance, but it's this beautiful shade of dark blond with a slightly reddish or auburn tint.
22) She grunts more than any creature I've ever seen.
23) When she was first born, she made this adorable little squee noise rather than crying. She'll still do it sometimes at the beginning of a cry, but it's slowly going away.
24) When she gets really worked up, she snorts a little between cries. I'm guessing that she'll be like her momma and snort when she laughs some day.
25) When she's napping during the day, she absolutely requires her pacci. Having the pacci fall out of her mouth will wake her up within minutes. (My goal is to have her off pacci by 6 months. Wish me luck)
26) Her skin is so unbelievably soft!!!
27) She's starting to not ball up quite so much when she's sleeping. She used to bring her legs up close to her body like she was sitting criss-cross-applesauce. I'm guessing that's how they were in-utero.
28) She loves being in the car. It puts her to sleep in no time.
29) She loves dancing with her daddy. Even in her grumpiest mood, she'll stop crying for a while when Mike dances around and sings to her. I think we have a daddy's girl in the making here.

That wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be. I'm so grateful for all the birthday wishes I've gotten today, but my birthday isn't nearly as important to me as it once was. Everything I do now is for her. I love my little Kaylee!!!

I Should Know Better...

...than to ever think that I'm alone. I felt good after writing my previous post. I got a lot off my mind and felt better having put so many emotions into words. Something interesting happens, though, when you put yourself out there. You find out that you are not the first or only person that has felt and thought exactly the same way. You find out that support is all around you and that things are never quite as bad as they seem.

Don't get me wrong, I have talked to Mike about all this, and he is amazing. He listens not only to what I say, but to what I really mean and knows when to offer suggestions and when to just hold me. I could not imagine a more loving, supportive partner. Even though he is going above and beyond as a husband and father, he is not a woman or a mother and can not completely understand what I'm going through.

Yesterday I went to a breastfeeding support group sponsored by our hospital. First of all, let me say that I found out that Kaylee can get 1.5 oz from nursing. This is amazing compared to the .5 oz she got when we met with our lactation consultant. I was so so excited. Anyway...I ran into a former coworker at the group and started talking with her. She has a 2 year-old and a 4 month-old. She was very interested in what brought me to the group and listened as I explained what we've been through over the past two weeks. I was amazed to hear that she had been through a very similar experience with her older daughter and has lived to tell the tale. She was encouraging and offered a few suggestions, as well as her contact information in case I wanted to talk sometime. Needless to say, this was great for me, and Kaylee and I will be returning to the group in the weeks to come.

Today I logged on to facebook and found more support from an unlikely source. A girl that I grew up with had been following this blog and sent me a message regarding my last post. She has two children and is a veteran of the breastfeeding war as well. Again, I was offered lots of encouragement and a few wonderful suggestions.

I'm slowly coming to realize that there is an unspoken bond between mothers. It's almost as if, by having my child, I earned a lifetime membership to a club that I didn't even know existed. I am so grateful for every kind word and harrowing story. I guess I feel, now more than ever, that I'm on the right path and that Kaylee and I will come out on the other side healthy and a little bit wiser.

Wherein You Learn Way Too Much About My Boobs

For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to be a mom. A big part of that dream has been nursing my child...being the person solely responsible for providing my child with what she needs. Things don't ever happen like you expect them to, though, do they?

You always hear people say that breast feeding is hard and can be painful, but it's worth it and you just have to commit. I always thought that only applied to other people. I thought it would come as second nature to me. I envisioned my child automatically knowing what to do and us having this amazing bonding experience. Wishful thinking, I guess.

Because of Kaylee's jaundice, she was really sleepy in the beginning and didn't have the strength to nurse properly. I also think, though I may be wrong, that the fact that we didn't get to try to nurse until she was nearly twelve hours old has been a roadblock as well. While we were in the hospital, we tried everything that was suggested, but nothing really worked. She was staying on my breast and she wasn't sucking hard enough to get what she needed. It was the hardest thing I ever did, but I finally gave in to giving her formula.

Everyone has said that once she gets over the jaundice, once my milk comes in, it will get easier. It's not. My milk is in and she's much more alert than she's ever been, but feeding still sucks and we're still using formula. For some reason, even though she's trying to nurse and I'm pumping every three hours, my supply sucks. Besides that, it's a total double-edged sword. If Kaylee has a really good time nursing, the pump immediately afterwords will suck. If I get a good pump, I know in my heart that my daughter didn't get what she needed while she was nursing.

Supposedly, I'm doing everything I can, I'm doing everything right, it just takes time, blah blah blah. This doesn't stop me from feeling like something's wrong...like I'm not able to do the most natural thing imaginable. I'm tired, my nipples hurt, and I hate pumping. Almost everything in me wants to give in. Almost.

I'm not quitting. Even though Kaylee may not be getting much, I love watching her try to nurse. I am obsessed with the moments that she looks up at me from my breast. If I know anything about myself, it's that I'm stubborn...always have been. I refuse to give up working for what I want and what I know is best for my daughter. For now, though, we just have to keep plugging away and be happy that Kaylee is growing and healthy, by whatever means necessary.

Picture Overload

I finally feel like we are getting things a little under control around here. I'm still not sure how to start writing about this new little person I have here, but I'll get there, I'm sure. Since I do, however feel like I've been neglecting the blog, here are some pictures. These span the time from her inauspicious beginning (even though they scare the crap out of me) to today. Enjoy!

The Rest of the Story

"My Labor Story" is my own hazy version of what happened during my almost 30-hour labor. I know that some of the details are a little skewed, but after going through something like that, details don't seem to matter much. As I read what I've written, though, there is a major piece missing...my coach...my biggest supporter...my forever love...my husband.

To say that Mike was my labor coach would be a gross understatement. I don't think that I could have survived anything that I've experienced in the last week without him. Mike was calm when I was frightened, empowering when I was doubtful, and above all, so so loving and supportive. When I think of my labor now, I don't really remember the pain, I don't remember the faces of the nurses that were with us, I barely even remembered that the bruise on my left wrist is from my iv. What I do remember is Mike's voice. I hear him telling me that I'm strong, that I'm amazing, that I can do what I set out to do, that he loves me. I have never in my life felt so connected to one person as I do to my husband.

I want Mike to know that I love him and am so appreciative of every little thing he does for me and for our daughter. Every kiss, kind word, and smile are forever imprinted in my memory. I so look forward to our life together, and I can't wait to see him grow as a father. Kaylee is a lucky girl to have such a dedicated daddy, and I am so pleased with our new little family.

(I also want Mike to know that I sat here in our bedroom and cried as I wrote this. I don't think he'll be surprised.)

My Labor Story

I guess it started around 7:30 Saturday evening when I discovered part of my mucus plug when I went to the bathroom. I was excited, but not really expecting anything. I was in bed later that night when my water broke at approximately 10:45. I have to say that it was one of the strangest feelings ever, and if it's really that rare for your water breaking to be a huge gush, call me rare. It was everywhere in an instant!!! We called my doctor's office and got a little confused when the line didn't role over to the on-call person, but called labor & delivery and headed on in.

They confirmed that I had, indeed, ruptured, as if there was any question. I hadn't really begun contracting and was still only 25% effaced and 1 cm dilated, so they gave me two hours for things to kick in on their own. At 4 am on Sunday, I still hadn't progressed, so they started the pitocin, something I hadn't wanted, but knew that I needed. The started me on too high a dose to begin with and we started seeing some decelerations in Kaylee's heart rate, so they stopped the pit, flushed my system, and started it again, more slowly.

Things started out pretty easy. Mike and I walked, chatted with family, responded to texts and sat on the birthing ball a lot. I would later abandon the ball when I got really nauseous. There is a lot in there that I don't remember, but by late Sunday evening, I was fully effaced and dilated to 9 with just a small lip left on the front of my cervix. Despite the ridiculous, pit-induced contractions, that lip wouldn't go away, so they began having me try to push while a nurse held it out of the way to see if that would help. All it did was make me want to push with every contraction, so when they told me to go back to "breathing through" the contractions, I was in excruciating pain trying to not push. I think it was at this point that I relented and finally accepted a dose of stadol. I was really wanting an unmedicated labor, but it was just too intense. At one point, I even remember thinking that I would be better off if they'd just take Kaylee via c-section, but I'm happy to say that didn't happen.

At 2:38 am on Monday, October 26, after about an hour of good solid pushing, Kaylee Beth Drews was born. Here is when another of my ideals went out the window...I didn't get her put directly on my stomach because she was rushed over to the warmer and surrounded by about five nurses. I could barely even see what was going on. Kaylee's one-minute apgar score was a 2, five-minute was a 4, ten-minute was a 7, and she eventually got a 9, but I don't know how long that took. Next thing I knew, Mike was following Kaylee's entourage to the nursery while my doctor tried to get my placenta out. I pushed part of it out, but when she said that part was still attached and that she'd have to reach in and help separate it from my uterus, I accepted a second dose of stadol.

When I eventually got to see Kaylee, she was in the nursery covered in all kinds of monitors and under an oxygen hood. I then watched as they placed an iv in the back of her hand. She looked so pathetic, but she was alive. I finally got to hold my daughter at 9:00 Monday morning, nearly seven hours after her birth. The days since have been an exercise in frustration, dealing with jaundice, anemia, and troubles with feeding, but we are finally home, and Kaylee is asleep in her crib in the next room. It was a long, frightening couple of days, but I am one happy momma.

Being "Checked"

Wow! Not comfortable. I would officially like to tell my doctor that if she needs to reach for my tonsils, it would be far more effective to go through my mouth. I think I've made my point.

Anyway, discomfort aside, I found out yesterday that I am 25% effaced and dilated to 1 cm. I realize it's not much, but it's something. It means that my body and my baby know what they are doing and everything is as it should be. I had a talk with Little Girl last night. I told her that since I have been doing my job for nine months now, I was very proud that she is doing her job as well. We are now really on the countdown to welcoming her home.

It's Still a Girl!!!

We had our 36 week sonogram this morning and got great news all around. Most importantly, the little one is healthy! She had a heart rate of 145 and is approximately 6 lbs. 5 oz. There is fluid in both her bladder and her stomach, so we know that her kidneys are working and she's been swallowing and all that. The amniotic fluid levels were right where they should be. We finally got the profile picture that we've been hoping for, and got to see her moving her head and working her mouth a bit. Fun stuff.

In case you haven't notice all the italics, I'm very happy to say that we got some confirmation that we are still expect a little girl. We have no problem with boys at all, but we have an awful lot of pink and lavender stuff at our apartment right now. :)

36 Weeks, Y'all!!!

How far along? 36 weeks
Total weight gain/loss: I don't know. I go back to the doctor on Thursday.
Maternity clothes? that's all that fits me
Stretch marks? got 'em
Sleep: not cool at all
Best moment this week: every single moment that I've gotten to spend with my husband
Movement: Yesterday the little girl totally conspired with her daddy to ruin my plans for a semi-busy Sunday. We had a little scare when she didn't want to move around much and seriously teetered on the edge of calling the doctor and going in to l&d. Luckily, she figured out that she had given her mommy enough of a panic attack and firmly secured the prospect of a lazy Sunday and got moving. I can see our future right now.
Food cravings: nothing specific
Gender: We have a sonogram tomorrow morning and will be asking for confirmation that this little one is, in fact, a girl. If not, though, I hope he likes lavender.
Labor Signs: nope
What I miss: Nothing right now...I'm ready to get this show on the road and completely give in to our new life as a family.
What I am looking forward to: our sonogram tomorrow
Weekly Wisdom: Don't freak out until you truly have something to freak out about.
Milestones: I am 9 months pregnant!!!

17 October 2009

30 Days

Lovely Daughter Of Mine:

I am issuing 30 day notice for EVICTION. You will have 30 days in which you can either gather your belongings and promptly vacate the premises, or wait until the final day, after which you will be physically removed from the property.

You are being evicted due to breech of contract and destruction of property. Expansions only to the FRONT of the house, within reasonable limits, were discussed. Not only have these limits been exceeded, but additions to the back of the house were also made!

Remodeling and gutting of the home was never approved, nor was changing the initial layout and base structure. And due to property damage, there are now leaks in both the upper AND lower levels of the home. On top of which, the landlord has received numerous complaints about nightly disturbances.

After 30 days, non-compliance with this notice will result in immediate and forceful removal at my discretion.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Love,
Mommy

A Month of "Lasts"

Yesterday Mike and I had our pre-admissions appointment at the hospital and then went out to dinner. We went to Kobe, one of our favorites.

As we were sitting and waiting for our soup, Mike mentioned that it's strange to think that this might be the last nice dinner out we have as a couple, without worrying about how to accommodate a baby. Strange.

I have a feeling that I'm going to start looking at a lot of things as a series of "lasts" in the coming month. The last date with my husband...the last lazy Saturday/Sunday as a couple...the last night out with the girls...the last baby-free trip to the grocery store...the last chance to take a long bath and totally pamper myself...the last time I feel my baby kick from inside me...it's so bittersweet.

12 October 2009

35 Weeks

How far along? 35 weeks
Total weight gain/loss: I don't know. I go back to the doctor next Thursday.
Maternity clothes? not quite cutting it for the cooler weather...grrr
Stretch marks? not so hot
Sleep: So the hand-tingling has tuned into more of a dull ache. Is that normal?
Best moment this week: Washing some baby clothes and getting to put away all those adorable, tiny little pink and purple items. So cute!!!
Movement: She's slowing down a bit (for lack of room, probably) but not enough for me to ever worry.
Food cravings: We had some crazy cookie cravings on Saturday night. One should not attempt to watch a Food Network program about cookies when there are no actual cookies in the house. It's bad news and leads to late-night grocery shopping.
Gender: Little Lady
Labor Signs: nope
What I miss: sleeping through the night...better get used to it, huh?
What I am looking forward to: seeing the little one again next Tuesday morning
Weekly Wisdom: Nap whenever possible. Sleep is a good thing!
Milestones: I finally feel like our apartment is ready and we have most of what we need to get through the early weeks of having a baby at home. Whew!

Updates and Pictures

On Wednesday I got the wonderful news that I am not, in fact, slowly poisoning my unborn daughter with too much sugar. What a relief! As much as I hate needles, I would gladly take a blood test again and even give myself daily injections if that's what it took to keep my little girl safe...but I'm glad I don't have to. :) We will have a sonogram on October 20 and then back for my 36 week appointment on the 22nd. After that, it's weekly appointments until the girly decides to join us. I can't believe how close I am to holding my child in my arms and looking into her face!!!

We officially have a nursery, complete with crib, dresser/changing table, and a glider rocker. I love it!!! Both Mike and I have wandered in there and just looked around with goofy-ass smiles on our faces at different times. Last night I sat in the glider and could just imagine what it will feel like to sit there holding our baby. I'm so ready. Anyway, this weekend will be all about moving all the random baby items from the piles in the living room to where they will be kept in the nursery. I'm so ready to have the rest of my house back...for a little while, at least.

Okay, okay...pictures...

Me with Mike's mom, sister, and grandma at the shower

Mike and I looking spiffy (and loving Little Girl) at the high school reunion

The crib, complete with ultra-girly bedding and not-so-girly Royals baseball mobile (I love it!!!)

The dresser/changing table with all of the necessary items

The fabulously comfortable glider, with a Grandma-made Royals blanket

Bella testing out the crib (We had to make sure it was safe!!!)

06 October 2009

34 Weeks

I did manage to get some more pictures, but I'll post them later on. I didn't bring my camera or the CD with pictures to work with me. Deal with it!

How far along? 34 weeks
Total weight gain/loss: I went to the doctor yesterday. I gained three more pounds, putting me up 23 pounds total.
Maternity clothes? That's what I wear.
Stretch marks? Check.
Sleep: I think I've been so exhausted the past few nights that I just pass out and haven't really notice the things that usually bother me. While it's nice that I'm getting some sleep, I just never feel completely rested. Suck.
Best moment this week: We made some serious headway on the baby's room. We spent the weekend cleaning and moving furniture, and then brought up the baby furniture last night. The next few days will be furniture assembly and putting things away. Finally!
Movement: Check. Actually, I think I felt my first official Braxton Hicks contraction yesterday. I may have had a few before, but that one was pretty unmistakable.
Food cravings: Nothing really, but I think I need to start eating better all around. Maybe that will help my energy level a bit?
Gender: Girl (we're having another sonogram on October 20...I will totally be asking the tech to double check)
Labor Signs: nope
What I miss: Feeling like I'm among the lucky that experience an easy pregnancy. At my appointment yesterday, there was a bit of sugar in my urine sample. That, combined with the fact that I'm measuring a bit ahead, convinced my doctor that I need to redo my glucose screening. As much as I hate needles, that isn't the worst of it. I'm just so worried that there might be a problem. I just want everything to be okay and for Little Girl to be healthy.
What I am looking forward to: not traveling for work anymore for a while after this week
Weekly Wisdom: I got nothing.
Milestones: As of yesterday, my doctor will no longer attempt to stop me if I should go into labor. Wow.

I Guess I Do Have a Few Pictures to Post

So this is the handful of pictures from the shower that were taken on my camera (thanks, Sarah). If you are reading this and have pictures on your camera, please email them to me!!! I require photographic evidence!!! :)

Here is the generous pile of gifts before I got to dig in. I can't say enough how very grateful and lucky we are!!!

This is the beautiful quilt that my grandma made for Little Girl. She is in the process of making matching receiving blankets as well.

This amazing quilt was made for Little Girl by Mary's mom, Jo. I actually got to help pick out the fabrics that she used, but I couldn't have even imagined that it would turn out so fantastically.

This is me with the amazing women that I am lucky to call my family. I know there's a picture out there somewhere with me and the equally amazing women from Mike's family. By the way, Kris totally could have fit without doing the awkward squatting thing. Oh well. :)

Finally, here is Miss Bella in the adorable tutu that we got from Mike's mom. I love it!!!

33 Weeks and No Pictures...Sorry

I was going to have all kinds of pictures to post with this week's update, but it just isn't happening. My plan was to have Mike take a 33 week picture yesterday, but we both kind of passed out yesterday afternoon and slept until after 7. I wasn't thinking about much more than food and more sleep at that point. I'm thinking that the third trimester has finally caught up with me and Little Girl is totally sapping my energy. As for Mike, having Bronchitis and trying to quit smoking is definitely taking their toll. We are zombies. Please forgive me.

How far along? 33 weeks
Total weight gain/loss: As of last week, I'm up 20 from pre-preg. I'll go back to the doctor on Monday for another check-up.
Maternity clothes? I still need to get some fall stuff. It's getting pretty cool here.
Stretch marks? I got 'em.
Sleep: Not so terrible, but I'm really tired of the whole crampy legs and tingly fingers thing.
Best moment this week: Our first ever mommy/daughter spending spree at Babies R Us last weekend. I took my belly and did a big return/exchange/shopping trip and got most of what we still needed after the shower. Once again, I feel so grateful for what everyone has done for us!!!
Movement: She's still in there.
Food cravings: none that come to mind
Gender: das Mädchen
Labor Signs: not for me
What I miss: Once upon a time I felt like I was ready for this baby. The closer we get, the more I realize that we have so so much yet to do. We'll get there...
What I am looking forward to: getting our furniture home and having a dedicated baby's room
Weekly Wisdom: I'm too tired to come up with anything deep this morning. Sorry.
Milestones: We have a car seat and stroller!!! Woohoo!!!

Catching Up...Trying To, At Least

I feel like this week has been a complete whirlwind! I'm not sure where the time went, but I don't remember very much at all.

On Monday night/Tuesday morning, my poor husband came down with Bronchitis. He's completely miserable but is being a real trooper. He's trying so hard to stay away from me, and won't even sleep in the same bed because he doesn't want to get me sick. He's so protective. I've been teasing him about it, but really, he's so sweet and I love this side of him. This little girl we're waiting for is so lucky to have a daddy that loves her and her mommy so much.

Speaking of Little Girl, we had a doctor's appointment yesterday. In the name of full disclosure, I'll go ahead and say that I gained 4 pounds in 2 weeks. My nurse didn't seem shocked, but I know I was. I'm officially blaming it on the baby shower, the high school reunion, and having a house guest for four days. For those who are counting, that's a total of 20 pounds from pre-pregnancy weight. Gah! The doctor freaked me out a bit when she informed me that they would not attempt to stop labor after I reach 34 weeks. 34? Seriously? That's totally just a week and a half away! I don't have any reason to believe that I'll go that early, but seriously? I'm so not ready for this. Everything else was fine, though. Little Girl is still measuring a bit ahead, so we may get another chance to see her and check on her size at 36 weeks. I'll take it!

I got a call yesterday, and our baby furniture is all in, paid for, and waiting for us in Topeka. I talked with my brother, and we are in the process of figuring out the how and when of getting the new furniture here and the old furniture back to his place. I'm so grateful for our amazing families and how helpful they're being! We are so so lucky!!! I'm ready to have a dedicated baby room and start doing laundry and putting stuff away. I think that will make things feel that much more real and make me feel that much more ready.

This weekend, we are going to do some exchanges and shopping at Babies R Us. I think this will get us pretty close to being done with the baby shopping. I'm sure I'll come up with a few more things to pick up here and there, but the major items will all be purchased.

I haven't had a chance to write much about my amazing baby shower last weekend. It. Was. Fantastic. Again, I feel so lucky to be surrounded by so many incredible women that love and support me and can't wait to meet my daughter. I think a rumor went out that we needed blankets for this winter baby, because we got a ton of them, including three breathtaking homemade items. My lovely friend Mary totally shocked me with a video she had been keeping from me working on for some time. She interviewed Mike as well as both of our families, used pictures of Mike and I as babies and through the years, set it all to Beatles music, and even included quotes from the very blog that you are reading right now. It was so beautiful and a gift that we will cherish for years to come. Thank you, again, for everyone who made sure I had such a lovely day!!!

22 September 2009

32 Weeks

How far along? 32 weeks
Total weight gain/loss: I'm not sure right now, but we do go back to the doctor on Thursday. We're down to appointment every 2 weeks!!!
Maternity clothes? There are pictures somewhere of Mike and I at the reunion, but I haven't received them yet. My dress was fantastic!
Stretch marks? ...are easier to see now that the henna is fading away
Sleep: Sleep was horrible the past few nights, but I'm convinced that it's because I was so busy and running around all the time. Hopefully things will get better as the weeks wears on.
Best moment this week: My baby shower...it was amazing! I have so many wonderful, generous and loving women in my life!!!
Movement: Starting to slow down just a bit...I'm sure it's getting cramped in there,
Food cravings: Hmmm...yesterday I went to the store for milk and ended up with doughnuts, cookie dough, and Cheetos. Shopping is dangerous.
Gender: girly girly girl
Labor Signs: nope
What I miss: I'm actually doing pretty good right now...no major complaints.
What I am looking forward to: Starting to get our apartment organized and that baby's room set up. We have a lot of work to do!!!
Weekly Wisdom: Rest is so so important. Don't underestimate how easily you get worn out in the third trimester!!!
Milestones: moving from having appointments every four weeks to every two weeks, we'll be down to weekly appointments before we know it

The Craziness

Note to readers: I'm going to blame the following scenario partially on pregnancy and partially on my mother.

Upon finding myself awake at 4:00 this morning, I somehow decided that it would be an opportune time to mop the kitchen and bathroom floors. I think I may have also done some dishes, but I'm not quite sure.

I think it's clear as to why I'm blaming this on pregnancy...the whole sleep thing...but some might be wonder why oh why I would blame this on my mother. I'll tell you...I have totally inherited her bad housekeeping habits.

I'm not a dirty person by any means (nor is my mother), but I have a terrible habit of letting little chores fall by the wayside on a daily basis. Clean dishes hanging out in the dishwasher or dish drainer for a few extra days? No problem. Clean clothes waiting a few extra days to be put away? Normal. Stacks of mail and papers and pictures and books and whatever else might accumulate on the coffee table or side table? Not a big deal. I don't have any excuses, it's just not a huge priority when it's just me and Mike. Here's the kicker, though...someone's coming to visit. Someone who doesn't live with my mild-chaos on a daily basis. Watch out!!! It is time to clean!!!

I remember how this would drive me nuts as a kid. Family would be coming in from out of town and all the sudden, the whole damn house had to be spotless. I thought it was crazy. Now Mike thinks I'm crazy. Great. I love my mother for so many reasons and now know why she loves to say, "No one ever had 'She kept a clean house' on her gravestone". Yes, my house will be neat and clean when people are coming to visit, but I openly admit that housekeeping is not high on my list of priorities.

I wonder if Little Girl will also follow in our footsteps...

A Letter To My Unborn Daughter

My dear, darling girl,

I am so so happy to know that you are growing and thriving. I love to feel your kicks and movements throughout the day. They help me stay confident in the knowledge that you are safe, happy, and getting bigger and stronger everyday. I feel like we already know one another and I can't wait to look into your eyes and feel your hand grasping my finger.

All that being said, seriously...those are my ribs. Back on up just a bit, Miss Thang!

All my love,

Mommy

31 Weeks

How far along? 31 weeks
Total weight gain/loss: As of last Wednesday, I was up 16 lbs. total from my pre-preg weight. Not too shabby. I'll take it.
Maternity clothes? I got my dress for the reunion. It's pretty, but it is a day dress. Yesterday, though, I got fancy shoes, a cool bracelet, and an awesome clutch that will evening-it-up for me.
Stretch marks? a badge of honor
Sleep: Ugh!!!
Best moment this week: Wednesday evening...a good doctors appointment, dinner out (India Palace...num num num), and having fun with my honey at childbirth class...it was really nice.
Movement: Holy crap, is this girl busy!!!
Food cravings: This week, I've been experiencing some "mystery cravings". I totally want something, I just can't figure out what it is. So obnoxious!!!
Gender: little lady
Labor Signs: not even
What I miss: getting up from a sitting position without horrible hip pain
What I am looking forward to: There is a lot to look forward to this week: a haircut, my baby shower (thanks to my amazing sister-in-law Kris and equally amazing friend Mary), fantastic 4-day visit from Sarah, my 10 year high school reunion...dang, I'm going to be busy!!!
Weekly Wisdom: Let people help you!!! They love you and want you to be as comfortable as possible.
Milestones: We brought home our first major baby item...we have a mattress!!! We may not have our crib yet, but we have a mattress, damn it! :)

"How Are You Doing?"

I hear this question at least three times a day. I hear, "How are you feeling?" about as often. I can't figure out how to describe the exact manner in which this is said, but it's always sugary sweet and a little bit patronizing. These questions most often come from women who have long past had their children. I've also noticed that they are usually women that aren't especially close to me, mostly just acquaintances. It really has me wondering how I should feel about this.

One part of me insists that people are caring and truly interested in how I am doing. There are good, well-meaning people out there, after all. This is the part of me that takes over and allows me to give a brief, upbeat description of how my pregnancy has been so far.

A much larger, but so far more subdued, part of me knows these women's real motive. They are looking for the opportunity to inform me that, "it only gets worse from here." Actually, it usually comes out as, "I hate to tell you, but it only gets worse from here." Why do they say this!? They don't hate to tell me it, they relish it!!! They love every opportunity to tell me their horror stories and fill me with dread for the next 10 weeks. Bah!!! Do they really think I don't know that things are bound to get more uncomfortable? Do I really look that naive?

For now, I'll just continue to bite my tongue, smile sweetly, give my brief reply and listen to what these women have to say. However, this is my formal warning...this good behavior can not last. Once their prophecies are fulfilled and things do, in fact, get worse, I will no longer find it necessary to be nice. I will be very happy to be grouchy and mean and blame it all on the hormones!

An Update

We went to the doctor yesterday afternoon. My last appointment was at 25 weeks, and in 5 weeks I've gained 3 (actually, 2.8, but who's counting?) more pounds, putting me up 16 total from pre-pregnancy. Not bad, not bad. My doctor told me that my blood work from a few weeks ago (glucose tolerance and hemoglobin) was perfect. We talked a little about what to expect in the next several weeks, the doctor poked around at Little Girl (she's head-down, thank goodness), and we listened to the baby's heartbeat. Everything seems really good, and we're now going in every two weeks. They also made me get a flu shot, but I don't want to talk about it.

After our appointment, we went to childbirth class number two. I think Mike and I both agreed that it was far more informative than last time, and we had a good time. I don't, however, think that our teacher likes us very much. Maybe we laugh and joke too much or something. I answered many of her questions, and while other couple received little prizes, we did not. Grumpy bitch.

07 September 2009

30 Weeks

I got this henna piece on my belly this weekend to celebrate Little Girl. Henna in the third trimester is believed to be good luck, bringing about an easy labor and healthy baby. I just thought it would be a fun thing to include in my pregnancy memories. I wonder what my doctor will say about it on Wednesday. Chances are, though, that being in Lawrence, this won't be the first time she's seen this.

. . . . . .

How far along? 30 weeks (!!!)
Total weight gain/loss: I will let you know on Wednesday.
Maternity clothes? I need to order the dress I want for my high school reunion!!!
Stretch marks? present and accounted for
Sleep: We went camping over the long weekend, and I slept ridiculously well. Do you think Mike would mind if I take to sleeping on our air mattress out on the deck? It's just a thought!
Best moment this week: spending four days in the middle of nowhere with my husband
Movement: I think I'm starting to notice hiccups from time to time.
Food cravings: nothing to speak of
Gender: Baby Girl!!!
Labor Signs: nope
What I miss: nothing right now...I'm feeling pretty blissful.
What I am looking forward to: my doctor's appointment on Wedneday
Weekly Wisdom: You don't have to let strangers touch your belly. It's just not necessary.
Milestones: 30 weeks...3/4 of the way there...crazy

Such and Such

Just a few notes before I'm off for the long weekend...

Last night was our first childbirth class. I was pretty excited to go, and was a little disappointed. The first class had little to do with the birth. It was mostly about what to expect in the third trimester, signs of pre-labor, and services that the hospital offers. We did a little bit of relaxation-type stuff in the end, but overall, there wasn't much new information. Oh well. Hopefully it will get much better.

Tomorrow we leave on our annual Labor Day camping trip. It looks like we'll get some rain, but it shouldn't get too horribly hot, so I'm okay with that. I love being able to get away from everything for a few days and just enjoy myself. I think Mike and I are both looking at this as our own little "babymoon"...our last chance to get away before we become parents. I hope that we can look forward to camping trips with our little one in the future.

31 August 2009

29 Weeks

How far along? 29 weeks
Total weight gain/loss: I don't know right now. I do, however, have a doctors appointment next week. I'm sure I've gained more than I would like to, but whatever...
Maternity clothes? Now that the weather has been so cool, I'm thinking more about looking for a couple sweaters or long sleeve options.
Stretch marks? a badge of honor
Sleep: My hips still really bother me at night, but oh well. I've also noticed that since I wake up more frequently, I'm remembering a lot more of my dreams. They're all pretty bizarre.
Best moment this week: Honestly, nothing is jumping out at me. It was a fairly run of the mill kind of week.
Movement: She is a very busy girl, until someone is watching or her daddy tries to feel. Then she stops in her tracks. Stubborn baby!
Food cravings: I finally got some carrot cake!!! I'd been wanting it for weeks now.
Gender: Baby Girl!!!
Labor Signs: nope
What I miss: rolling over in the bed without whimpering in pain
What I am looking forward to: This is an exciting week! We begin our childbirth classes this Wednesday and then get to leave for our four-day camping trip on Friday. I love it!!!
Weekly Wisdom: You don't have to listen to everyone's advice all the time.
Milestones: I got nothing.

Funny Stuff

I was pointed to this website where you can have people try to guess different things about when your baby will be born. I thought it was just kind of funny, but what the heck!!! Maybe I'll even do something fun for whoever is the closest. Go make your guesses!

27 August 2009

Stubborn Baby

Last night Little Girl was going crazy moving around, so I decided to try to get some video of my stomach moving. I got our little camcorder, got comfortable and put the remote control on my belly. As soon as I turned the camera on, she stopped moving. No matter how much I poked and nudged, she would not move. I got annoyed and stopped recording. While I was deleting the useless video I took, guess who decided to start kicking? I quickly got the camera going again, hoping to catch the renewed burst of energy...nothing. What a stubborn girl!!! At least we know, with Mike and me for parents, that she comes by it naturally.

25 August 2009

What a Difference 7 Weeks Makes

Last night I had Mike take at picture of me for 28 weeks. I was originally just going to go in and add to my post from yesterday. That was until I looked at my 21 Week picture and my 28 Week picture side to side. Holy crap!!! I realize that it makes sense that I'd be a lot bigger this week, but I hadn't even noticed how much bigger I was. Check it out!!!

Again...I'm a little bit afraid of what the next 12 weeks will bring.

24 August 2009

28 Weeks

How far along? 28 weeks
Total weight gain/loss: I'm not sure, but I do feel like I'm the size of a house lately. This is especially scary though, because I saw a woman at my doctors office that must be close to her due date and she look huge and miserable. I'm not looking forward to that at all!
Maternity clothes? That's what I wear.
Stretch marks? yup
Sleep: My leg cramps have absolutely sucked the last couple nights! I also have noticed that when I turn from one side to the other, my hips hurt like a bitch!!! Other than that, sleep is sleep.
Best moment this week: I just found out that the results of my glucose tolerance test were well within normal. I do not have to take the 3-hour test. I do not have gestational diabetes!!! Woohoo!!!
Movement: Lots and lots and lots. I had one slightly scary night and morning when Little Girl was being lazy, but she perked up pretty quickly after I got into work. Really, she is always so active while I'm at work!
Food cravings: I wouldn't call it a craving, but my favorite breakfast right now is fresh berries (hurrah for the Farmers Market) with granola cereal and vanilla yogurt. So so so yummy!!!
Gender: Pink Ladies Rule!!!
Labor Signs: No way! I think I may have started feeling a few Braxton Hicks contractions here and there, but I'm not completely sure.
What I miss: eating spicy and flavorful food without the fear of heartburn
What I am looking forward to: going to a friend's baby shower this weekend (I'm sure it'll make me even more excited for mine!!!)
Weekly Wisdom: Naps are your friend!!!
Milestones: Trimester Number Three!!! I put this again this week because I haven't been able to get a clear answer anywhere to whether it's really 27 or 28 weeks. Either way, I'm there now and still can't believe how fast things are going!!!

19 August 2009

And Now I'm Scared

So I was just reading a blog that I follow. This girl is pregnant also, but one week ahead of me. She had found out that she was having a girl a few weeks before I did. Yesterday, though, she had an optional 3D ultrasound and was told that her little girl, in fact, has a penis. She's having a boy! The first ultrasound was wrong!!! Holy crap.

What are the chances? Does this happen often? Have we been shopping and planning for the wrong gender? Had this not happened to my fellow blogger, would I even be thinking about it?

I guess, since we're so not paying for a 3D ultrasound, if this little one turns out to be a boy, he'd just better like lavender.

18 August 2009

27 Weeks

How far along? 27 weeks
Total weight gain/loss: Don't know, don't really care.
Maternity clothes? I love 'em!!! I need to start looking for a dress for the big high school reunion, though.
Stretch marks? They are there. I've now added two Kitty scratches from trying to give him pills...they kind of blend in with the stretchies!
Sleep: not too bad, except for hand-numbness and leg cramps
Best moment this week: shopping for material for the baby quilt (which, I heard, is completed), and looking at babies in the nursery with Mike
Movement: All the time!!! Luckily, there's been a little more action in the evenings for Daddy. Last night Mike had his head on my belly and was talking to Little Girl...she kicked him in the face. It was fantastic and I was jealous. Sometimes I'd like to kick him in the face...only kidding!
Food cravings: I think Mike really has market cornered on cravings lately.
Gender: little lady
Labor Signs: Nope!!!
What I miss: being able to shave my legs comfortably
What I am looking forward to: water aerobics starting up again tonight
Weekly Wisdom: If at all possible, get pregnant later in the year so that by the time you can't reach your legs any longer, it will be winter and you can just wear pants.
Milestones: Trimester Number Three!!! Dang, this is flying by really quickly!

14 August 2009

26 Weeks and a Love Letter

How far along? 26 weeks...I know that I will be 27 weeks in just a few days, but I've been both busy and lazy this week.
Total weight gain/loss: Don't know, don't really care.
Maternity clothes? comfy...
Stretch marks? Yep, I got 'em.
Sleep: Last night is not a good example, but I've been sleeping great lately!
Best moment this week: getting to "play" with Little Girl
Movement: I've been having so much fun "playing" with the little one this week. Once she gives me a kick, she'll usually go back and forth with me (her kicking, me poking) for up to five minutes. It's pretty amusing.
Food cravings: Nothing, really, but I did get some amazing blackberries at the Farmers' Market last weekend.
Gender: girly girly girly
Labor Signs: Not even.
What I miss: I can't think of a thing right now. I'm so glad that I'm finally beginning to really enjoy my pregnancy!!!
What I am looking forward to: shopping for baby quilt material tomorrow
Weekly Wisdom: no idea
Milestones: "interactive fetus" status
. . . . . .

Dear Darling Little Girl,

I have had so so much fun playing with you this week. I love feeling you move within me, and it's just amazing to me that now you can feel and respond to me as well. Feeling your little movements is my constant reminder that you are growing and doing well and that all is right in my world.

If I had one wish, it would be for you to save some energy for the evenings. Most of our play time is during the day while I'm at work, and Daddy is missing out. I know that he would love to get to know you and feel your kicks and punches as well.

I love you so much!!!

~Mommy

Furniture!!!

Yesterday we went to Topeka and ordered the furniture for Little Girl's room. I could only find a picture to download with all three pieces, but we only got the crib and dresser. We love the darker-colored wood, especially with the cutie lavender and pink bedding we're getting!!!

So begins the excitement of preparing the baby's room. There are many things that must happen before the furniture can come to our apartment. First of all, we have some family hand-me-down furniture that will go back to Topeka for the time being. With only two bedrooms, we just don't have extra space. The next project will be figuring out what to do with the computer. Mike has suggested leaving the desk in the baby's room and setting the computer up on the dining room table. While this is a viable option, I do not like the idea of having the computer out in the open. I think it would just make our living room area look so cluttered. I'm thinking that I want to take the desk back into our bedroom, just like when we had roommates. We have room, and it's not too too cramped that way. I'm thinking of completely rearranging our bedroom, but I'm not quite sure. We are also keeping our eyes open for one more piece of baby-room-furniture. We desperately want a glider with ottoman for those late-night feedings. I'm sure it will all come together beautifully, let's just hope it does so before we get too close to November.

08 August 2009

100 Days!!!

Today my ticker tells me that there are only 100 days left in my pregnancy (according to my due date)!!! How can this have flown by so quickly!?

As Mike and I were wandering around downtown (we had finished at the Farmer's Market and were waiting for Borders to open), we talked about "getting ready". I think we might finally be ready to really put some thought into turning our computer/guest room into Little Girl's room. Whew! It's going to be quite an undertaking, but I'm excited to see how it all works out. Wish us luck.

04 August 2009

25 Weeks

How far along? 25 weeks
Total weight gain/loss: I went to the doctor yesterday, so...I gained 6 more pounds. That makes 13 total from pre-pregnancy weight. Will it ever stop!? :)
Maternity clothes? That's pretty much all I wear. I have a couple non-maternity tops that I'll still wear, but that's about it. I'm beginning to wonder what of my old clothes will fit again after Little Girl is born.
Stretch marks? I guess I'm kind of getting used to them. I think it just goes with the territory. I'm beginning to wonder, though, if I'm going to get a linea negra (weird dark line that goes from your belly button down). There's no sign of one yet.
Sleep: I'm using my body pillow on more of a regular basis. I think I'm sleeping better, but the legs cramps are kind of driving me crazy.
Best moment this week: Mike getting to feel his first kick
Movement: I got to see my first kick yesterday! I was in the waiting room at the doctor's office. The other people waiting must have thought I was a nut job when I randomly started laughing at my belly.
Food cravings: I finally got to have the cheese fries that I've been thinking about for a month. They were fantastic!!!
Gender: We're waiting for a beautiful, darling little girl. I'm so excited to meet her. I read the other day that if you have a daughter, you're carrying the person who will hold your hand when you lay dying. Kind of morbid, but something to think about...
Labor Signs: Not even.
What I miss: being comfortable (and yes, I know it will get worse before it gets better...)
What I am looking forward to: Having all my lovely friends and family together for my baby shower. I know its still a month and a half away, but I'm excited!!!
Weekly Wisdom: F*ck the naysayers cause they don't mean a thing! (311)
Milestones: movement that you can feel/see from the outside
. . . . . .

Two extra stories this week...

First, about my "Weekly Wisdom". Yesterday someone who hasn't seen me since May asked me, "Where are you hiding that baby, in your hips!?" I was honestly kind of hurt, but I'm choosing to get over it. I feel like my body has changed quite a lot, and I love how I look pregnant. I guess it just brought one of my big fears to the surface...just looking bigger not really pregnant. Oh well.

Second, about how I have the sweetest husband ever. Last night (or early this morning, rather) I had trouble getting comfortable after waking up to pee. I eventually decided to give the couch a try. Mike was still awake and came out to sleep with me. Our couch has recliners on either end, so he lays in a recliner and I get to stretch out with my head on his lap. This is my favorite way to nap, and we both fell right asleep. I give him a tough time sometimes, but he's been so so sweet. I feel so lucky and I know that I absolutely could not do this without him.

Ooh...bonus extra comment. Mike and I have decided that rather than buying a baby book, I'm going to make one scrapbook-style. This will be one of my first major scrapbooking projects, so I'd love any suggestions!!!

30 July 2009

A Letter

To my beautiful, sweet little girl:

Today you gave us a gift. You finally kicked one of your tiny feet hard enough for your daddy to feel it. I'm so proud of you! You're getting so strong. While I'm sure there will be many more such moments to come, I wanted to thank you for sharing this gift. I'm so so happy for your daddy to be a part of the joy I've been experiencing the last few weeks.

I'm having so much fun getting to know you and am so excited to meet you, hold you in my arms and share you with the world. I hope you know how loved you are.

Your Mommy

28 July 2009

24 Weeks

How far along? 24 weeks
Total weight gain/loss: I don't know, but will find out at my appointment next Monday.
Maternity clothes? We went to Topeka last weekend, and Mike's mom had gotten me some stuff off the internet. I passed on a few pieces (one was too small in the boobs, the other was yellow), but most were really nice. I'm glad that some people are good on online shopping, because I am not.
Stretch marks? I just noticed more yesterday. sigh
Sleep: It's still better as long as I don't talk to Mike when I get up to pee. That's bad news for both of us.
Best moment this week: watching the sun rise with my wonderful husband
Movement: Holy cow! She's all over the place!!!
Food cravings: I had a huge craving for a soda the other day. All Mike had was diet...it sucked!
Gender: IT'S A GIRL!!!
Labor Signs: Not even.
What I miss: taking good drugs when I have a headache
What I am looking forward to: Going to see the Wiggles with my mom and the boys this Saturday. I know that's sad, but it'll be a good time!!!
Weekly Wisdom: If all else fails, make a list.
Milestones: VIABILITY!!!

27 July 2009

The Moby

I was so excited to get my Moby sling on Friday that I just had to try it out. The Moby is a long piece of fabric that can be wrapped for a variety of holds. I chose this sling because it is versatile, will work with toddlers as well as babies, and Mike could use it as well without adjusting straps or anything.

I decided that Bella would be a good candidate for helping me out with the first trail run. I figure that she's roughly the same weight as a young infant, so why not. Bella did not enjoy the process of being put into the sling, but once she was in, she was pretty content. She's such a snuggler, I don't think she would protest much about being carried around like that all the time.

22 July 2009

23 Weeks

This is my first (very brave) bare-belly picture. I'm only slightly horrified.

How far along?
23 weeks
Total weight gain/loss: I haven't the slightest.
Maternity clothes? As previously mentioned, I went shopping and got some new things last weekend. I think I'm done shopping for myself until the weather changes.
Stretch marks? Did you look at the picture? I think it's fairly obvious.
Sleep: much, much better lately
Best moment this week: Having a girls day out...shopping and seeing a chick flick.
Movement: I get to feel little kicks and punches every day. When I'm sitting down, I feel them up under my ribs a lot, most often on my right side for some reason.
Food cravings: I may or may not have gone to the store at 10:00 the other night for brownies and ice cream. It was very important. I'm still marveling that I went myself. Someone needs to tell Mike about how expectant fathers usually do that type of thing.
Gender: IT'S A GIRL!!!
Labor Signs: No way!
What I miss: being able to sit comfortably in my arm chair and read or watch TV for more than 15 minutes at a time
What I am looking forward to: I'm anxious for Mike to get to feel some movement from the outside. He was trying the other night, and while Little Girl was cooperative and kicking back at him, he just didn't feel it. I hope it won't be long.
Weekly Wisdom: It may be time to start doing some hard-core planning.
Milestones: I got nothing right now.
. . . . . .

In case you think I've been neglecting Mike a bit, I now submit pictures of how 23 weeks looks on my dear husband. I informed him today that the mountain man wanna be beard had best be gone before I return home from work this afternoon.

20 July 2009

Dreams and Other Things

On Friday night we had the weirdest thing happen around here. I had a really sad dream (don't feel like going into details), and towards the end of it, I started crying pretty hard. The strange thing is, though, that I started crying in real life. Crying isn't even the word...I was sobbing, loudly enough to bring Mike in from the other room to check on me. I guess he thought I'd gotten a phone call or text message that really upset me. Well I guess he said my name several times and then laid down next to me and touched me on the shoulder, which woke me up. I was so confused, still crying, and had to convince myself that it was all just a dream. How bizarre is that!? I am officially not a fan of pregnancy/hormone-induced dreams. Not cool at all.

On a happier subject, Little Girl is kicking me a lot today. I keep feeling her nudges under my ribs on the right side. Luckily it doesn't hurt yet since she's still pretty little, but it's really strange. I do like the little reminders that she's in there and doing well, though.

I went on a little shopping binge yesterday and today. Yesterday I went to Motherhood Maternity at Oak Park Mall and got another pair of jeans, two tops, and a cute dress (on sale). I ordered a bra today from Motherhood.com (they didn't have a great selection in the store), and also ordered the Moby sling that I wanted. I was going to wait on that last one, but I saw today that they had a limited supply of the color I wanted. I'm excited to be a baby-wearing momma!!!

14 July 2009

22 Weeks

How far along? 22 weeks
Total weight gain/loss: I haven't the slightest. At least 7 pounds up (as of last Wednesday), maybe slightly more.
Maternity clothes? I'm still enjoying them. I'm now debating the bra situation, though.
Stretch marks? nothing new there
Sleep: Some nights are better than others, but I'm doing okay.
Best moment this week: Getting to see our little girl again and knowing that she's doing well.
Movement: I felt the first little thumps on Sunday. I think the little one was on a sugar high from my nephew's birthday cake. I felt a couple yesterday and more today.
Food cravings: nothing specific
Gender: IT'S A GIRL!!!
Labor Signs: No way!
What I miss: Honestly, I'm starting to really enjoy things. I think I just had to get over that feeling of not having control and stop whining about it.
What I am looking forward to: more and bigger thumps
Weekly Wisdom: I got nothing right now.
Milestones: finding out the gender and feeling more than just fluttering

It's a Girl!

Today we had our mid-pregnancy ultrasound. Today we found out that we are going to have a little girl join our family. We are so so pleased...tickled pink, if you will.

The whole ultrasound experience was just wonderful. The tech was amazing and gave us a running commentary the entire time she was looking around. I was blown away by how she could move the wand ever so slightly and see something completely different. I was also thoroughly impressed by how she knew what everything was!

We got to see our little girls arms and legs (two of each), her little face staring right at us (no profile picture for us), her heart (complete with four chambers), her spine, her kidneys (two of those as well), and so many other things (including her girlie bits, thank you very much). Our baby girl is just perfect and growing right on schedule, so our due date stays the same: November 16. Right now she weighs about 1 pound. I think my favorite measurement was that we were told that the palm of her hand is about the size of the tip of my pinkie. How frickin' adorable is that!?

Mike and I spent the afternoon visiting our family in Topeka and sharing the good news. Everyone was just thrilled! It was a good day.

08 July 2009

21 Weeks

Baby bump and a fresh hair cut...what a treat!!!

How far along? 21 weeks and doing well!!!
Total weight gain/loss: Went to the doctor today, so...up 4 more pounds from last time for 7 pounds total from pre-preg.
Maternity clothes? so so so fantastic
Stretch marks? not from the baby
Sleep: It's getting better every night. The numbness/tingling in my hands in obnoxious, but there are worse things.
Best moment this week: celebrating my wedding anniversary for the last time as a twosome
Movement: I feel it every day, but I'm ready for those little jabs and kicks.
Food cravings: Nothing special, but I had some killer comfort food for dinner and am getting ready to eat some watermelon. Good stuff.
Gender: Friday Friday Friday (can't wait)
Labor Signs: Not even.
What I miss: Nothing much right now...I'm doing pretty good.
What I am looking forward to: going back to the doctor on FRIDAY for our big ultrasound
Weekly Wisdom: Don't freak out over little stuff. It's going to be okay, I swear.
Milestones: I don't know right now...I'll have to think about that one.
. . . . . .

So my blood pressure was a little high for the first time at today's appointment. They weren't too worried since everything else looked good, but my nurse took it again after the doctor was done with me, and it was back down to where it had been. Call me a hippie Lawrence freak, but I think I know why it was higher today. At past appointments, I've taken some time in the waiting room to do a little deep breathing and think about everything baby. Today, I read a magazine and didn't have a chance to do that at the beginning of the appointment. I did, however, take the opportunity to do so between my doctor leaving and the nurse coming back in. I guess it sounds a little fruity, but I think it must make a difference.

Pregnancy Brain

It's a real thing, I swear!!!

So today (my anniversary, by the way), I leave for work like normal. About half-way there, I realize that my phone is almost dead, plug it into the car charger and contemplate going back home for the real charger. I decide against it and continue to work. Once I parked, I still had a few minutes, so I waited in the car to give my phone more time to charge. It was then that I realized that my laptop (without which very little blogging, facebooking, or actual work can be done) was still sitting next to my chair in the living room. I headed home.

So I get home, marvel at my snoring husband, and grab my computer and phone charger (I was thinking there). I then drove through McDonald's to get breakfast (parfait and orange juice...kind of healthy) and continue on to work for the second time. Once I got to work, I gathered all my belongings (or so I thought) and headed inside. I got up to my office and realized that my computer? Is still in my car. Wow. How productive am I!?

So anyway, this is my first real bout with "pregnancy brain". Mike refuses to believe that it is a real thing, but I swear it's not just an excuse. It's in the "What to Expect..." book, and isn't that supposed to be gospel or something?

I'm happy to say that I've been more productive since retrieving my laptop from the car.

20 Weeks

How far along? 20 weeks...half-way there, baby!!!
Total weight gain/loss: who knows...
Maternity clothes? Love them!!!
Stretch marks? not from the baby
Sleep: Last night was another rough one, but I did get some good sleep after I took a shower at 4:30 am.
Best moment this week: feeling the baby moving around a bit more
Movement: Still nothing blatant, but I can feel it for sure.
Food cravings: Here's what I've decided...I'm not really having cravings per say, but I'm very susceptible to suggestion. Things that are driving me crazy...commercials (especially for Denny's and Orida french fries), and smells (the other night I caught a whiff of pizza after the concert...it was killer).
Gender: I'm totally considering going in and holding my doctor hostage until she refers me for an ultrasound. If you see something on the news about a crazy pregnant lady in Lawrence, start coming up with alibis for me.
Labor Signs: Not even.
What I miss: watching TV without feeling like I'd kill for every item of food that they show
What I am looking forward to: our next appointment...hearing the heartbeat and finding out the gender
Weekly Wisdom: I got nothing...
Milestones: slightly more obvious movement

One Groovy Baby

Last night the baby and I were both initiated into the Drews family...we attended our first Chicago concert (with Earth Wind & Fire). It was a late night, but so so much fun!!!

At a couple points, I am so sure that I felt the baby moving...all during really upbeat songs, by the way. I would be dancing and then just stop to enjoy the movement. Mike and I were trying to decide what that baby was thinking with everything going on. Our guesses are that (a)the baby loved the music and movement of me dancing, or (b)the baby was thinking, "What in the f*ck is going on out there!?". Whatever the reason, the little one was definitely doing summersaults.

Welcome to the family, Little Drews!!!

19 Weeks

How far along? 19 weeks
Total weight gain/loss: who knows...
Maternity clothes? I wore my new pair of pants yesterday, and I think I will be happy wearing maternity pants for the rest of my life. It was a transforming experience.
Stretch marks? not from the baby
Sleep: I have slept so well the last two nights, it's not even funny. Let's hope it stays that way for a little while at least.
Best moment this week: Mike getting really excited about everything and finally admitting that he's going to be an amazing dad. He makes me so happy!
Movement: I DON'T KNOW!!!
Food cravings: nothing, really...
Gender: I'm so excited to find out. The wait is killing me! We're now kicking around fun ways to tell everyone the big news. I'm also so excited for Mike and I to be able to call my belly by name (only when we're alone, though...our name choices are totally hush hush!!!).
Labor Signs: Not even.
What I miss: I'm feeling pretty okay this week.
What I am looking forward to: feeling more distinct and obvious movement
Weekly Wisdom: Stand up for what you want.
Milestones: Mike
. . . . . .

There's no picture this week, but I don't honestly think things have changed that much! It's amazing to me to think that I'll be 20 weeks on Monday...half-way there, baby!!!

I don't know if this is early signs of nesting, but I'm planning a major cleaning overhaul on our apartment this weekend. I'm just so tired of looking at piles of crap and I know that if we don't get it taken care of before I'm huge, it will just keep getting worse. I would love to be more organized so that we have some type of system in place by the time Little Drews shows up.

Happy Father's Day (A Day Later)

Dear Daddy,

Thank you for loving my mommy so much. I know that you're helping her keep me safe while I'm inside her belly. I love it when you take her on walks and help her make dinner. I know she loves it while you play with her hair and talk her into taking naps. I don't think she could do it without you.

I liked how excited you got when you and mommy got to see me at the doctor's office. You were the first one to see my face and I know it made me so much more real to you. I really love it when you talk to me and give me kisses through Mommy's belly. I can't wait until you can feel me kicking back at you and especially for when you get to hold me the first time.

I know that you are going to be an awesome daddy, and I'm so glad to be part of your family.

Love you,
Little Drews (and Becky)

18 Weeks

I took my own picture this week, so it's boobs and belly as far as the eye can see!!! I may still have Mike take one, but this works too. My belly's still not perfectly round, but it's getting closer every day.

How far along? 18 weeks
Total weight gain/loss: In case you haven't noticed, I do not weigh myself between doctor visits, so I don't know unless I've been recently. :)
Maternity clothes? I got some leggings from Target (I'm brave), and ordered some pants and a skirt online. So far, I'm loving everything I have...so comfy!!!
Stretch marks? not from the baby
Sleep: getting better...
Best moment this week: realizing that I'm pretty sure I can feel the baby moving
Movement: I think that's what I'm feeling! I'm still a little up in the air about how exactly you're supposed to tell.
Food cravings: nothing, really...
Gender: I can't believe I have to wait 3.5 more weeks!!! It's driving me nutso!!!
Labor Signs: Not even.
What I miss: Nothing really...I'm feeling pretty good.
What I am looking forward to: feeling more distinct and obvious movement
Weekly Wisdom: Don't worry if you get worn out from merely changing the bed sheets...that's what husbands are for.
Milestones: maybe feeling the baby
